5 Simple Tips For Landing That Promotion

You are currently viewing 5 Simple Tips For Landing That Promotion

You have been working in the same role for some time. You feel senior management keeps passing you over for potential career advancements and promotions. You feel frustrated, unappreciated and wondering why. Why are you not getting selected?

To take control of your career, ask yourself these questions

  • Where do you see yourself in the organisation?
  • What do you want to be recognized for?
  • Besides your boss, what other leaders do you know in the organization?
  • Is this organization right for you?

Once you have clear answers, here are 5 steps to get your promotion on the fast track.

1 – Know The Role You Desire To Transition Into

Start by understanding the role you would like to have. What does the role entail?  What skills do you need? What level of leadership experience is required? What’s the pay scale and the transitional steps you need to take in order to get there? Do your research.

2 – Identify Your Gaps

Now that you know what your dream role entails, do you have all the qualifications and expertise? If you don’t, identify the gaps. See what opportunities are available for filling those gaps through leadership training and development within the organization and how to qualify. Also, look for external training and development opportunities. As a leader, it’s on you to take your career in your own hands. Be proactive. Take the first steps.

3 – Map Your Timeline

Have a clear outline for what you need to do and how you plan to go about getting there. Have target dates to stay focused on your goals. If you tend to procrastinate and need support, consider securing the help of a career coach to help keep you accountable and on track.

4 – Get A Mentor

Be open to communicating with your boss about your goal/vision for career advancement. Also, look within or outside the organization for a mentor who can help you achieve that role. This could be someone in a similar role or in a higher role. And if these options aren’t available to you, then work with a career development coach to help mentor you into the role.

5 – Be Realistic

We know you’ve been waiting for this promotion and now that you’ve taken action, it will happen. However, it is important to understand that it takes time. Depending on whether you want to stay at your current company or start fresh at a new company, there are many decisions you have to weigh.

It’s not uncommon to know you need to take action to propel your career to the next level, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming, in fact downright daunting.
